After Prince Harry stepped back as a working royal four years ago, King Charles III has shared a poignant four-word reply to questions about the Duke of Sussex’s possible return
It seems as though there’s no room for Prince Harry to return to the Royal Family despite the number of working royals depleting. King Charles, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, has recently resumed public duties, though he previously had to temporarily stop many of his public engagements after revealing his diagnosis in February. Meanwhile The Princess of Wales is also off work following her own cancer diagnosis.
Earlier this year reports had circulated that Prince Harry, whose relationship with his father has been fraught, could temporarily step back into royal duties while his father focussed on his health.
Having stepped back as a working royal in 2020, reports claimed that the Duke of Sussex, 39, was open to temporarily stepping back into a royal role while his father received cancer treatment, with Harry reportedly telling friends that he would be willing to do so.
But since stepping back from the royal family four years ago, Prince Harry’s relationship with his father has been somewhat strained, with the Duke of Sussex claiming in his controversial memoir Spare, that his father prioritised his own interests over his own, reports the Mirror.
Despite Prince Harry’s public comments, King Charles has remained largely quiet on the matter. However, he did give a surprising four-word response when asked about Harry during an event last year.
The incident occurred while the King was visiting the University of East London’s Stratford campus to celebrate its 125th anniversary and inaugurate its new hospital and primary care training hub.
During his visit, King Charles took the time to greet some students and other fans who had gathered to see him. As he was shaking hands, one man called out: “Bring back Harry please, can you please bring him back please, Sir? .”
Initially, the King seemed not to understand who the man was referring to, asking: “Who? ” When the man clarified: “Harry, your son”, King Charles gave a poignant reply: “It would be nice”, before swiftly moving on.
In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Prince Harry hinted that his father’s health scare could be the catalyst for a reconciliation between them. The Duke of Sussex, who has been estranged from his father since stepping down as a senior royal, said: “I love my family” and expressed gratitude for being able to spend time with King Charles III during his recent visit to the UK.
However, he remained tight-lipped about the specifics of his father’s condition, stating: “that stays between me and him. But he said he would be visiting his father in the future: ” Despite this, he confirmed plans to visit his father in the future. “I’ve got other trips planned that would take me through the UK or back to the UK, so I’ll stop in and see my family as much as I can,” he said.
